We live in a culture that treats busyness like a badge of honor. Full calendars, constant notifications, and endless responsibilities can make us feel important—even productive. But there’s a quiet, dangerous trade-off that often goes unnoticed: the more crowded our lives become, the less room we leave for God.
Being “too busy” for God rarely feels like a deliberate decision. It’s subtle. It looks like skipping prayer because you’re running late. It sounds like, “I’ll read my Bible later,” but later never comes. It feels like exhaustion at the end of the day, when your mind is too drained to seek Him. Over time, what was once a relationship becomes an afterthought.
The Illusion of Busyness
Busyness convinces us that everything we’re doing is urgent. But Scripture challenges that mindset. In Luke 10:38-42, we see the story of Mary and Martha. Martha was busy—serving, preparing, doing what needed to be done. Mary, however, chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen.
Martha wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was being responsible. But Jesus gently corrected her focus:
“Martha, Martha… you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better…”
The issue wasn’t activity—it was priority.
When Good Things Replace the Best Thing
Not everything that fills our time is bad. Work, family, ministry, responsibilities—these are all meaningful. But even good things can become distractions when they take God’s place.
We often say:
- “I don’t have time to pray.”
- “I’ll spend time with God when things slow down.”
- “I’m just in a busy season.”
But the truth is, if we wait for life to slow down, we may never return to Him fully. Busyness doesn’t just fill time—it can quietly reshape our values.
The Cost of Spiritual Neglect
When we become too busy for God, we don’t just lose time with Him—we lose alignment, peace, and clarity.
You might start to notice:
- Increased anxiety instead of peace
- Reacting instead of responding with grace
- Feeling spiritually dry or distant
- Carrying burdens you were never meant to hold alone
Psalm 46:10 reminds us:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness isn’t optional in a healthy relationship with God—it’s essential.
Reordering Your Life, Not Just Your Schedule
The solution isn’t necessarily doing less—it’s putting God first within what you already do.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33:
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Notice He didn’t say “fit God in when you can.” He said seek Him first.
That might look like:
- Starting your day with even 10 intentional minutes in prayer
- Turning off distractions to read Scripture
- Talking to God throughout your day, not just in quiet moments
- Choosing presence with Him over perfection in your schedule
A Heart Check
Ask yourself honestly:
- What do I consistently make time for?
- Where does God fall on my priority list?
- Am I busy with things that matter—or distracted from what matters most?
God isn’t asking for leftover time. He desires relationship.

Closing Reflection
Life will always demand your attention. There will always be something to do, somewhere to go, someone who needs you. But in the middle of it all, God is still inviting you to sit with Him.
Not because He needs you—but because you need Him.
Busyness may fill your day, but only God can fill your soul.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being present even in the middle of our busy, overflowing lives. You see every responsibility, every pressure, and every moment that pulls our attention away from You. Forgive us for the times we have placed You to the side, thinking we would come back when life slowed down.
Lord, quiet our hearts. Teach us how to be still in a world that never stops moving. Help us to recognize that time with You is not another task—but the very source of our strength, peace, and direction.
Reorder our priorities, God. Give us the discipline to seek You first, not last. When we feel overwhelmed, remind us that we were never meant to carry everything on our own. Draw us back into Your presence daily, even if only for a few moments, and let those moments transform our hearts.
Remove the distractions that keep us distant from You. Replace our stress with Your peace, our striving with Your rest, and our busyness with purpose rooted in You.
Lord, create in us a desire for You that is stronger than the pull of our schedules. Let our lives reflect a deep relationship with You—not just in words, but in how we live, choose, and prioritize.
Thank You for Your patience, Your grace, and Your constant invitation to come closer.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
