Deception, Discernment, and God's Healing Truth

Father,

Thank You for being the God of truth. In a world where deception can wound deeply, help me keep my eyes fixed on You. Give me discernment to recognize what is true, courage to accept the truth even when it is painful, and wisdom to walk away from what does not honor You.

Guard my heart from bitterness and replace it with Your peace. Teach me to forgive as You have forgiven me, while also giving me the wisdom to establish healthy boundaries. Help me judge by the fruit of a person's life rather than appearances, remembering that You alone know every heart.

Heal every place where lies have distorted my identity. Remind me that I am not defined by another person's deception, but by Your love, Your grace, and Your promises. May Your truth continue to set me free and shape me into someone who reflects the character of Christ.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

There are countless social media posts that claim:

"You won't realize until the end that the narcissist has been lying to you from the beginning. You were in love with a complete illusion, a lie, a fraud."

For many people who have survived emotionally abusive or manipulative relationships, those words resonate deeply. They describe the shock of discovering that the person they trusted was not who they claimed to be.

But as Christians, our standard isn't social media—it is God's Word.

So, is this statement biblical?

Let's examine it through the lens of Scripture.

The Bible Acknowledges That Deception Is Real

One thing Scripture never does is pretend evil doesn't exist.

From Genesis to Revelation, deception is one of Satan's primary weapons.

Jesus said:

"He was a murderer from the beginning... for he is a liar and the father of lies."
John 8:44

The enemy deceives.

People influenced by sinful hearts deceive.

False teachers deceive.

Manipulative people deceive.

The Bible never tells believers to ignore deception or excuse sinful behavior.

Proverbs 26:24–26 says:

"Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbor deceit..."

Sometimes a person's words sound loving while their heart is anything but.

That is why discernment is a spiritual necessity.

Life Application

Not every smiling face carries honest intentions.

God calls us to be loving—but He also calls us to be wise.

God Sees What We Cannot

Sometimes we wonder:

"How did I miss it?"

The answer is often simple.

You couldn't see what only God could see.

People can hide motives.

They can wear masks.

They can perform goodness.

But they cannot fool God.

1 Samuel 16:7

"People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

Many manipulative people become experts at managing appearances.

God isn't fooled by appearances.

Eventually...

Truth comes to light.

Luke 8:17

"For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed..."

God has a way of exposing what deception worked so hard to hide.

The Bible Doesn't Use the Word "Narcissist"

This is important.

The word "narcissist" is a modern psychological term.

Scripture doesn't diagnose people with modern clinical labels.

Instead, it describes behaviors.

The Bible warns about people who are:

  • Proud
  • Arrogant
  • Self-loving
  • Deceitful
  • Abusive
  • Without self-control
  • Lovers of themselves more than lovers of God

2 Timothy 3:1–5

Paul describes people who are:

  • lovers of themselves
  • lovers of money
  • boastful
  • proud
  • abusive
  • ungrateful
  • unforgiving
  • without self-control

Notice something...

God focuses on fruit—not labels.

Judge the Fruit, Not the Label

Jesus never told us to diagnose people.

He told us something far better.

Matthew 7:16

"By their fruit you will recognize them."

Fruit reveals character.

Not charisma.

Not promises.

Not emotions.

Fruit.

Ask questions like:

  • Do their actions consistently match their words?
  • Do they take responsibility for sin?
  • Do they seek repentance?
  • Are they producing the fruit of the Spirit?

Time exposes fruit.

Truth exposes fruit.

God exposes fruit.

Were You in Love With an Illusion?

This is where the social media quote becomes too absolute.

Some people truly create a false identity.

Others exaggerate.

Some manipulate.

Others struggle with deep sin while still possessing genuine qualities.

Only God fully knows every heart.

Instead of saying:

"They were completely fake."

Scripture would encourage us to say:

"They presented themselves differently than who they consistently chose to become."

There is an important difference.

That keeps us from becoming bitter while still acknowledging reality.

Truth Brings Freedom

One of the hardest parts of healing is accepting the truth.

Not the fantasy.

Not the potential.

Not who we hoped they would become.

Truth.

Jesus said:

"You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
John 8:32

Freedom often begins with painful truth.

Then healing follows.

God never exposes deception to shame His children.

He exposes it to rescue them.

Forgiveness Is Not Pretending

Some Christians believe forgiveness means pretending nothing happened.

The Bible teaches something different.

Forgiveness releases vengeance to God.

Forgiveness does not require:

  • trusting an untrustworthy person
  • ignoring abuse
  • removing healthy boundaries
  • allowing repeated manipulation

Romans 12:19 reminds us:

"Do not take revenge... but leave room for God's wrath."

Justice belongs to God.

Healing belongs to God.

Wisdom belongs to God.

Discernment Is an Act of Love

Discernment isn't suspicion.

Discernment isn't cynicism.

Discernment isn't assuming the worst.

Discernment is asking God to help us see people truthfully.

Jesus demonstrated both compassion and wisdom.

He loved deeply.

He forgave freely.

Yet He was never manipulated by appearances.

As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate both His love and His discernment.

The social media quote captures a painful experience that many people genuinely identify with.

However, Scripture calls us to avoid sweeping judgments.

Instead of labeling people, God invites us to examine fruit, seek truth, and entrust ultimate judgment to Him.

When deception is uncovered, remember this:

  • God saw what you could not.
  • God was not surprised.
  • God can redeem what was meant to wound you.
  • God uses truth to set His children free.

No matter what has happened, your identity is not found in the lies someone told you. It is found in the unchanging truth of Jesus Christ.
